Sfumato is a term that is derived from art of painting.

It is a painting technique, whereby the outline of the subject in a painting is blurred, so that the forms become somewhat vague and the contours less sharp. This effect is achieved by applying a number of transparent colour layers over the subject.

This sfumato technique was developed in the 15th century by Leonardo da Vinci. Due to this technique, his subjects, like the Mona Lisa, do not stand completely still and transfixed in the background; instead they appear to be alive and to move. This contrasts strongly with the works of his contemporaries, which strike one as somewhat more primitive.

The Mona Lisa, with it is shadowed areas around the eyes and the corners of the mouth, lets one experience the sfumato technique.
